MGC to start distributing gas in 2026

Matola Gas Company (MGC), through its subsidiary Beluluane Gas Company (BCG), a gas distribution company, may start its activities in 2026.

The project is already being prepared for the reception of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the Rovuma Basin and other quarters, according to the technical representative of the BCG project, Marco Morgado.

The investment is valued at over $500 million, and is expected to supply over 300 million gigajoules of gas for distribution and feed the Beluluane Thermal Power Plant (2000 MW), another project in the pipeline of the business group in partnership with TotalEnergies.

The final investment decision for the project will be made next year. At the same time, the start of construction work is planned, following a schedule of activities already defined, taking into account the importance of the venture for industrialization and guaranteeing energy sustainability in the region in the coming years.

The company has obtained the concession from the Government for the import of LNG, including the operation of a flutuant permanently moored storage and regaseification unit, and a new high-pressure pipeline.

The pipeline will connect the flutuant unit with a new gas-fired thermal power plant to be built at the Beluluane Industrial Park in Matola, which will connect Matola Gas Company’s pipeline to the Rompco pipeline supplying neighboring South Africa to the grid.
