Recent figures released by the Bank of Mozambique (BdM) reveal that Mozambique imported almost 1.1 million dollars in cars per day throughout 2023, pointing to growth compared to previous years. According to a BdM statistical report, which compiles information from the three quarters of 2023, the country imported a total of 314.2 million dollars in vehicles during that period.
The figures show a significant increase in car imports into Mozambique in recent years. In 2020, imports reached 253.8 million dollars, rising to 345.5 million dollars the following year and reaching 369.3 million dollars in 2022, according to the document.
In the first quarter of 2023, car imports totaled 101.7 million dollars, followed by 112.9 million dollars in the next quarter and 99.6 million dollars in the third quarter, from July to September.
Car imports accounted for more than 20% of Mozambique’s total of 1.5 billion dollars in imports of consumer goods in the first nine months of 2023, consolidating its position as one of the country’s main imports.
Overall, Mozambique’s imports, which also include intermediate goods, capital goods and others, reached 6.5 billion dollars in the three quarters of 2023. In comparison, imports totaled 13.3 billion dollars throughout 2022 and 7.9 billion dollars the previous year.
The increase in car imports may reflect a growing demand for vehicles in the country, driven by economic development and the population’s increased purchasing power. The trend may also indicate a greater availability of credit for car purchases, as well as a change in the consumption patterns of Mozambicans.
