BdM spent 3,292 million meticais on issuing banknotes and coins in 2023

The Bank of Mozambique spent around 3,292 million meticais on issuing banknotes and coins in 2023, an annual report from the institution revealed. Despite this, the country ended the year with a total of 80,456 million meticais in circulation, down from 80,737 million meticais in 2022.

According to data from the Bank of Mozambique, in 2023 the country had more than 101,651 million meticais in banknotes in circulation and almost 1,807 million meticais in coins. However, during the year, 12,664 million meticais worth of banknotes and coins were destroyed.

With regard to the production of new notes and coins, the central bank spent more than 3,292 million meticais in 2023, compared to 3,372 million meticais in 2022. According to the bank, these costs are amortized against profits over a period of three to five years from the date of issue.

These figures reflect the importance of the efficient management of the country’s financial resources, especially in relation to the production and circulation of banknotes and coins, which has a direct impact on the economy and the national financial system.
