Tomás Rodrigues Matola, Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB).
Before assuming the presidency of HCB, Tomás Matola led the Banco Nacional de Investimentos (BNI) in recent years, where, despite adverse national and international economic conditions, he managed to stabilize the bank, consistently delivering profits and positive financial results while distributing dividends to shareholders.
Tomás Rodrigues Matola was born in Maputo in 1979. He holds a degree in Management from the Faculty of Economics at Eduardo Mondlane University, where he graduated as the top student. He has specialized in Banking Management and Petroleum & Gas Business Management at the Catholic University of Portugal and the Higher Institute of Science and Technology of Mozambique (ISCTEM). Additionally, he serves as a university lecturer, teaching courses in monetary economics, financial systems, and banking management.
Matola has extensive experience in the financial sector, having worked at Millennium Bim, the Bank of Mozambique, and the now-defunct Mcel, where he founded and managed the compliance department for the mKesh mobile wallet. At BNI, he held various positions, including Deputy Director, Director, Executive Board Member, Chairman of the Board of Directors (concurrently serving as CEO for three years), and finally, CEO under a governance system that separates the roles of Chairman and CEO.
Matola left BNI just days after presenting the bank’s 2022 results, which showed net profits of approximately 208 million meticais. Under his leadership, BNI was profitable and distributed dividends to its shareholders—an uncommon practice in Mozambique’s state-owned enterprises.
