According to Domingo newspaper, to be called SunMoz Solar Power Plant, the contract has already secured more than 250 hectares of land for the development of the project in an area that is located near the Chimuara substation, belonging to the company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).

According to the above source, when completed, this project is expected to produce up to 100 MegaWatt (MW) of electricity, with about 30MW of clean, reliable and renewable energy available to the national power grid in the first phase.

Solarcentury Africa’s head of development, Jason De Carteret, made it known that these companies are also developing a second project to build a photovoltaic plant in Malawi, but stressed their full enthusiasm for working with the Mozambican partner, Checunda Investimentos.

The source we have been quoting also writes that, RESA’s managing director, Stan Chikakuda, said that a considerable amount of work has already been done and stressed that the partnership developed between the three companies “brings the necessary skills and experience to take the project forward.”

Checunda Investments’ Chairman of the Board (PCA), Alberto Cuvelo, who also acts as SunMoz’s PCA, emphasized the importance of the relationship the consortium is developing with local communities and other local partners in order to bring the initiative to fruition on time and smoothly.

The partnership between Solarcentury Africa, RESA and Checunda Investimentos gained momentum during the most recent visit of the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, to England, during which it was also announced that Globeleq and its local partner Source Energia are developing a project called Namaacha Wind.

This is the first commercial wind farm to be set up in the country and is expected to provide up to 120MW of clean energy, with terms being agreed with EDM. It is estimated to cost up to £180 million and is due to go into construction in the second half of 2023.
