African countries have right to negotiate fuel with Russia, analysts say

On her recent visit to the Republic of Uganda, the US diplomat to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that buying oil products from Russia, under sanctions due to the war in Ukraine, will be in violation of US sanctions and therefore there will be consequences.

Reacting to the US ambassador’s warning, analysts Alberto Ferreira and Jose Matemulane explain that the warning violates the sovereignty and independence of countries.

“This appeal is an attack on African sovereignty and independences,” repudiated analyst Alberto Ferreira.

“It is, in fact, morally repudiating. It is neither ethical nor moral. Nobody gave Americans the authority and legitimacy to decide what is good or bad in their countries. Nobody voted to ask permission whether or not they can buy Russia’s gas or fuel and weapons,” noted analyst Matemulane.

For both interlocutors, the United States wants to have more allies in its power struggle against Russia. And African leaders need to evaluate internal interests to minimize the cost of living.

Matemulane leaves no doubt that the United States of America “wants to remember that they are in charge” and that countries should choose “the principle of the lesser evil, what is the best for their population and for the countries at this time,” Matemulane clarified.

The analyst adds that the African continent is called, once again, to the challenge of independence from the control of developed countries.

In turn, Ferreira reiterates that “the African countries will seek the best products for their countries according to expenses, profits, and losses,” he said.

Matemulane and Ferreira underline that Mozambique, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, can buy Russian fuel without choosing allies in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
