The Machipanda border post, between the Mozambican province of Manica and Zimbabwe, is now operating 24 hours a day. The extended hours are intended to cope with the increase in truck traffic entering and leaving the port of Beira.
Abílio Mathe, spokesman for the Manica Provincial Directorate of Migration, explained that the adjustment was necessary to align the timetable with the 24-hour operation of the port of Beira, ensuring that the released trucks do not accumulate on the road linking the two places. The continuous flow between Mozambique and Zimbabwe has led the authorities in both countries to increase the number of border officials to meet the demand.
The growing circulation of goods between Mozambique and Zimbabwe has required an increase in the number of border officials to cope with the demand. This change aims to facilitate trade and promote more efficient logistics for the transportation of goods, benefiting both countries and the companies involved in cross-border trade.
It is worth noting that the Ressano Garcia border, the main connection point between Mozambique and South Africa, has already been operating 24 hours a day since 2022. This extension of border opening hours reflects the importance of cross-border trade for the regional economy and highlights the countries’ commitment to facilitating the flow of goods and promoting sustainable economic development.
