Yum explained that the project requires between five and six years to build, involving the installation of the hydroelectric plant and the high-voltage transmission line between Tete and Maputo, covering between 1,350 and 1,400 kilometers.
The Director emphasized that the country is in the process of finalizing financing for the project by the end of the year, highlighting the strong interest of several development finance institutions in participating.
Of the total amount of five billion dollars needed for construction, 1.3 billion will be provided by the consortium in charge of the project, with the rest to be secured by financial institutions, and the financing is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
Yum stressed that the hydroelectric plant, powered by a renewable source, will be crucial to the country’s energy transition strategy, noting that issues of environmental, social, economic and financial sustainability are being carefully considered.
The infrastructure will not only contribute to national energy inclusion, but will also strengthen Mozambique’s position as a major energy exporter in the southern African region.
Despite the new project, the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant (HCB) will remain the largest in the country, with a current production capacity of 2075 MegaWatts.
The Mozambican government, in partnership with a consortium led by Electricité de France (EDF), is moving ahead with preparations for the implementation of this project, which is crucial for Mozambique’s energy growth.
