The initiative predicts that, in the next six years, at least 50% of the population will have access to the internet throughout the national territory, and that coverage will be extended to rural areas for more than two million people who do not have access to a mobile phone signal. .
Currently, in the country, only seven million people have access to the internet, out of the approximately 30 million inhabitants that make up the Mozambican population. And, in rural areas, a third of the population lives in places where there is no signal or skills to use the internet.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications thus intends, through this project, to reverse this scenario and develop the telecommunications system in the country.
For his part, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Daniel Nivagara, stated that, with the implementation of this initiative, the Mozambican population will benefit from better digital services provided in a secure manner, prioritizing broadband internet, access to information and digital services in various economic and social areas.
Zayra Romo, representative of the World Bank, stated, in turn, that “digital systems have a transversal function, and in Mozambique they will support many sectors, and it is therefore essential to count on Government leadership and support from the private sector .”
The “Digital Acceleration of Mozambique” project was launched this Monday, December 12th, in the City of Maputo, and is in partnership with the Ministries of Science and Technology, Education and Human Development and the State Secretariat for Professional Technical Education.
