EDM earmarks 18.9 billion meticais for universal electrification

EDM destina 18,9 mil milhões de meticais à electrificação universal

On Tuesday, August 13, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) announced an investment of more than 18.9 billion meticais (approximately 300 million dollars) to continue the second phase of the Universal Electrification Program. This program, which will run from 2024 to 2027, aims to significantly expand access to electricity in Mozambique.

Sílvio Romeu, manager of the “Energy for All” electrification project, pointed out that EDM faces the challenge of connecting more than four million families to the national electricity grid by 2030, a crucial step towards achieving the target set by the presidential initiative launched in 2018. “Energy for All” aims to ensure that all Mozambican citizens have access to electricity by the end of the decade.

However, Romeu pointed out that the vandalization of EDM’s infrastructure has been one of the main obstacles to the project’s progress. Despite these challenges, the second phase of the initiative is underway in various regions of the country, with the ambition of reaching the proposed targets on time.

Last year, the Norwegian and Swedish embassies in Mozambique signed new agreements with the World Bank in Maputo to support the second phase of “Energy for All”, pledging to provide around 2.1 billion meticais (33.5 million dollars) to carry out the project. This phase envisages 400,000 new connections to the National Electricity Grid and 90,000 connections using renewable systems, benefiting a total of 2.2 million people with access to sustainable energy.
