Energy interconnection project with Malawi expected to be completed in December

The representative of the Chinese state engineering company SINO HYDRO, in charge of building the Matambo substation, Yang Yanlong, said on Tuesday, August 6, that the electricity interconnection project between Mozambique and Malawi has made new progress, with completion scheduled for December this year.

According to an article published this Wednesday, August 7, by Rádio Moçambique, after successive postponements of the delivery deadline due to various difficulties, the contractor has guaranteed that the work in progress will be completed within the new schedule.

According to the source, construction work on the Matambo substation has already reached around 60% completion, and it is believed that in the next two to three months commissioning will be carried out, thus preparing for final delivery.

For the installation of the power transmission line along the 141 kilometers that cross Mozambican territory, 100 of the 304 planned towers have already been erected.

The deadline for completion of the contract was reiterated by the civil works supervisor, Firmino Langa, who expressed the hope that the supply of materials would continue at the current pace, in order to avoid further delays.

The project employs around a thousand workers, including Mozambicans, Chinese, Zimbabweans and Zambians. The substation under construction will have an installed capacity of 400 Megawatts, of which Malawi will import only 120 Megawatts.
