Formalizing the informal sector can help improve the lives of Mozambicans – ILO

The intention was expressed today by the Executive, bringing together for this purpose the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Union.

According to national statistics, pointed out in a basic study to support the transition from informal to formal sector, more than 80 percent of the active labor force in Mozambique is in the informal sector.

If the informal paid the proper fees and taxes, the sector would contribute more than 30 percent to the Gross Domestic Product, hence the government wants business initiatives to be formalized.

“The ILO wants jobs that are already formal not to be informalized. We have seen here, especially in countries like Mozambique, where unemployment rates are often high, many young people are not able to enter the labor market. So the ILO sees very carefully the need for us to support companies and operators in the informal economy”, said the representative of that organization.

It should be noted that this is a four-year initiative and is funded by the European Union. The organization has good prospects for the implementation of this project in the country.
