The key leaders in Maputo’s transport sector, António Matos, PCA of the Metropolitan Transport Agency, and Amade Camal, General Manager of Metrobus, announced a strategic collaboration to tackle the challenges and drive improvements in the city’s transport system.

António Matos, in discussing the challenges facing the sector, highlighted the complexity of serving the more than three million inhabitants spread across seven municipalities and diverse urban and rural areas. He stressed the importance of regulation, highlighting the revision of legislation to incorporate concepts such as the integrated transport system. Investments in infrastructure, professional training and partnerships for modal integration were announced as part of the Metropolitan Transport Agency’s comprehensive plan.

Amade Camal, for his part, shared the perspective of Metrobus, a private company focused on efficient intermodal transportation. He stressed Metrobus’ commitment to prioritizing passengers and tackling persistent challenges such as congestion and the significant costs associated with traffic. The company is investing in electric vehicles as part of its vision of greener transportation, with local production scheduled to begin in 2026.

The collaboration between these two entities aims to combine efforts to significantly improve the transportation system in Maputo. Also in this vein, the managers focused on the need for an integrated approach, highlighting the importance of public-private collaboration to efficiently meet the needs of the population.

The joint plan includes the construction of new bus rapid transit (BRT) system lines, the development of applications to facilitate the transport of workers and the optimization of resources to coordinate new routes.

This partnership seeks not only to solve immediate challenges in the transportation sector, but also to promote a transition to a more sustainable and efficient system, reflecting a joint commitment to the well-being of the Maputo community.
