The Ministry of Transport has announced the start of maintenance work on approximately 5,000 kilometers of regional and national roads, in an initiative aimed at significantly improving the passability and safety of roads throughout the country. This effort encompasses both the main highways and tertiary roads, reflecting a comprehensive commitment to the development of national road infrastructures.
According to the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, routine maintenance will cover a total of twenty thousand kilometers of roads. The main aim of this project is to ensure the continuous improvement of traffic conditions, contributing to the country’s economic and social development.
“We are mobilizing funds to ensure that the work continues without interruption,” said the minister. “In addition to maintenance, the funds will be used to rehabilitate 4,787 kilometers of regional and national roads.”
The report also states that 14 bridges will benefit from maintenance work, while the rehabilitation of three others will be completed. In addition, 12 new bridges are to be built to improve connectivity between different regions. Carlos Mesquita also pointed out that the Executive intends to start asphalting work on 1,200 kilometers of access roads, which will facilitate mobility in the most remote areas.
In the water resources sector, three dams will be rehabilitated: the Locómuè dam in Niassa province and the Gorongosa dam in Sofala. In addition, construction will begin on the Moamba-Major dam, in the district of Moamba, Maputo province, as well as the construction of eighty small hydraulic infrastructures and excavated reservoirs.
The minister said that, in Maputo province, the rehabilitation and widening of the road from the Novar Shopping Center to the Tchumene junction is underway, covering a length of approximately 10 kilometers. The works to build services in this area have already resulted in a significant improvement in passability, reducing congestion at the main junctions. Other ongoing projects include periodic maintenance on the N2 road, Boane-Namaacha, and the improvement of the bridge over the Incomáti River in Moamba.
With regard to water supply and sanitation, the minister highlighted the inauguration of six water supply systems in the towns of Pontia and Massango, in the district of Magude; Bedjile and Nsime, in Matutuíne; and Muzele and Bandoia, in Moamba. The Infulene Wastewater Treatment Plant was also inaugurated.
In Gaza, efforts are focused on rehabilitating the N1-Praia crossing roads in Xai-Xai, covering a length of 10 kilometers, and improving the Ndonga-Ndindiza road, as part of the Emergency Action Plan (CERC). Also in the province, work is underway to rehabilitate and raise the protection dykes in Xai-Xai and Chókwè, covering the sections of the Health Center in Xai-Xai, Chilaulene, Matuba, Chissime, Machua and Chalucuane, respectively.
