Government speeds up electrification and achieves 60% national coverage

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has invested around 3.1 million dollars (equivalent to 200 million meticais) to bring electricity to remote communities in the provinces of Zambézia and Nampula. The project benefited the administrative posts of Calipo and Regone, located in the districts of Mogovolas and Namarroi, and is part of the “Energy for All” program, an initiative developed in partnership with the Energy Fund (FUNAE) with the aim of guaranteeing universal access to electricity by 2030.

In the first three months of 2025, EDM exceeded its targets, making 90,000 new connections compared to the 45,000 initially planned. This progress reinforces the government’s commitment to expanding the electricity grid and improving people’s quality of life.

Since 2020, 73 administrative posts have been electrified, 56 of which have joined the national electricity grid and the remaining 17 have systems based on renewable sources.

The most recent figures from the Ministry of Finance show that over 560,000 new household connections were made by 2024, bringing the coverage of energy access to 60% of the population, a significant increase on the 53.4% recorded the previous year.

The expansion of the electricity grid has been accompanied by investment in the power transmission infrastructure. As part of this strategy, the first 40 kilometers of the 400 kilovolt (kV) high-voltage line were built, an essential project to connect the country from north to south, covering the Temane, Maputo, Chimuara and Alto Molócue sections.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) also highlighted the growth in energy production in the country, which has increased by 5.3% over the last five years, rising from 18,700 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2019 to 19,700 GWh in 2023. Renewable energy production played a key role in this advance, with hydroelectric power stations standing out, accounting for 82.7% of the electricity generated last year.

Investment in the electricity sector continues to be a priority, with the aim of strengthening the distribution network and ensuring a stable and efficient supply for a growing number of consumers across the country.
