The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, inaugurated Friday, July 1, 2022, the first 110kV Power Transmission Line, interconnecting the Electricity Systems of the Central and Southern Regions of the country.
On the same occasion, the Temane Substation was inaugurated, which together with the Casa Nova Substation in Chibabava and the Vilankulo Substation in the district with the same name, are part of the Vilankulo Rural Electrification Project.
The new transmission line, which is about 240 km long, interconnects the substations of Casa Nova, in Chibabava District, Sofala Province, and Temane, in Inhassoro District, Inhambane Province, and will improve the quality and reliability of power supply in the north of Inhambane and the south of Sofala.
During the inauguration ceremony of the new electrical infrastructures, Filipe Nyusi stressed that “it is with a sense of accomplishment that, for the first time, we materialize the interconnection of the Central and Southern Regions, through the 110kV Chibabava-Temane Power Transmission Line. In a progressive way, Energy is balancing the country’s development, taking social and economic infrastructures of public utility to the most remote areas, thus renewing the local population’s hope to enjoy the benefits inherent to the connection to the electrical grid”.
In the scope of the construction of these infrastructures, 280 jobs were generated, in all the districts covered by the Project, namely: Inhassoro, Vilankulo and Govuro, in Inhambane Province, and Chibabava and Machanga, in Sofala Province.
Furthermore, about 40 million US Dollars were invested in this Project, financed by the Kingdom of Sweden. According to the Head of Cooperation of that diplomatic representation in Mozambique, Mrs. Kajsa Johansson, her country has supported, for over 40 years, projects of generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, with the aim of providing better services of reliable and sustainable electricity, which will ensure “inclusive, effective and sufficient services for public goods and families,” stressed the diplomat.
For energy to play the role of a driving factor in national development, the President called for community vigilance in combating vandalization and theft of electricity infrastructure.
“Only in this way can we be sure that the dream of electric energy will reach our Mozambican brothers, who are waiting their turn to have energy in their homes,” said the Mozambican Head of State.
Electricidade de Moçambique, E. P. (EDM) is committed to implementing electricity infrastructure projects, with a view to guaranteeing Universal Access to Electricity by 2030.
