Kenmare Moma: One of Africa’s largest mineral sand operations

Mozambique is home to one of the largest mineral sand operations in Africa, most notably the Kenmare Moma Titanium Minerals Mine. The UK-listed Kenmare mine is characterized by its deposits of heavy minerals, including ilmenite, rutile and zircon.

The minerals ilmenite and rutile play a crucial role in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. These products are widely used in sectors such as paints, paper and plastics, contributing to various industrial applications. In addition, the zircon extracted plays an essential role in the production of opacifiers for ceramics, further expanding the mine’s range of applications.

Kenmare Resources Plc, responsible for the operation, has played a prominent role by not only extracting these valuable mineral resources, but also by demonstrating a significant commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. The company has implemented measures to mitigate environmental impact, highlighting its water management system and community support projects.

Heavy mineral mining is an essential part of Mozambique’s economy, providing essential raw materials for various industries. Kenmare Resources Plc becomes a key player in this scenario, providing not only valuable resources, but also showing a commitment to sustainable practices and the local community.

Kenmare’s annual report for 2022 indicates that annual production from the Moma Mine in Mozambique represents approximately 7% of global titanium raw materials.

From Moma, Kenmare supplies more than 25 customers operating in more than 15 countries as part of the global titanium raw materials industry valued at 4.5 billion dollars a year.
