M-Pesa and GIZ sign partnership to strengthen financial inclusion

On April 9, M-Pesa and GIZ signed a strategic partnership agreement to create a financial services ecosystem accessible to small farmers and rural micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

The project aims to support the design and development of innovative financial products, the implementation of financial education initiatives and the expansion of the network of M-Pesa Agents and Traders, focusing especially on the inclusion of women and young people in selected areas of Mozambique.

Sérgio Gomes, Director General of M-Pesa said: “With the support and experience of GIZ, we are confident that we can significantly expand the impact of M-Pesa, offering financial solutions that effectively respond to the needs of our communities. Together, we aspire to create an inclusive financial ecosystem that drives economic growth and improves the well-being of Mozambicans, especially those in rural communities.”

Through this agreement, M-Pesa and GIZ aim to contribute to the country’s financial inclusion and economic development, providing the most vulnerable communities with the means to manage their finances, invest in their activities and, consequently, improve their living conditions.

Silke Hansen, Director of Private Sector and Finance Programs at GIZ, pointed out “the importance of this partnership within the framework of the new VAMOZ Competir project, which aims to support the creation of an ecosystem that facilitates access to finance for small farmers and MSMEs. In this process, the partnership with M-Pesa is important for the development of (digital) financial products tailored to the needs of our target groups, with a special emphasis on products and services that use a sustainable and resilient approach and are aimed primarily at beneficiaries in the agricultural sector.”
