Manica plans to process more than a thousand tons of cotton in 2024

The Manica provincial government aims to process more than a thousand tons of seed cotton by 2024, with plans to sell it on the national and international markets. A large part of this product will come from the district of Guro, where the processing factory is located.

According to Edson Tanga, delegate of the Cotton and Oilseeds Institute of Mozambique in Manica, the organization has already received more than 600 tons of seed cotton from producers so far.

In recent years, more than 47,000 farmers in the region have invested in cash crops such as cotton, soybeans, sesame and sunflower, due to the existence of buyers who pay fair prices.

Last year, the government approved maintaining the minimum prices for seed cotton, the ginning tax and the subsidy on the minimum purchase price for producers, which were in force during the 2022-23 agrarian marketing year.

The decree approved set first quality seed cotton at 33 meticais per kilo, second quality at 23 meticais per kilo and ginning at 8 meticais per kilo. The minimum price subsidy was set at 7 meticais for each kilogram of first quality seed cotton, and 4.80 meticais for second quality.
