Marcelino Gildo Alberto: The New Commander of Mozambique Airlines

The General Assembly of Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), convened in an extraordinary session, appointed Marcelino Gildo Alberto as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company.

He succeeds Américo Muchanga, who has now taken on the role of Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation.

Industry sources interviewed by “Profile” considered Marcelino Gildo Alberto’s appointment to the leadership of LAM a positive decision. His career began at Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) in 1993, where he held various positions, including Department Head, Project Manager, Project Director, Board Member, and Advisor to the Chairman.

On June 17, 2020, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of EDM for a four-year term, a position he held until July last year, when he was replaced by Joaquim Henriques Ou-Chim.

Now, Marcelino Gildo Alberto transitions to LAM at a time when the airline is facing severe financial and operational challenges, struggling to meet its obligations.

His leadership is defined by a strong reputation for vision and strategic management, bolstered by key commercial relationships with entities such as RNT, ZESCO, and HCB.

The multinational CARMA, a specialist in Media Intelligence, published a study in 2023 titled “CEO Media Report Mozambique 2023”, ranking Marcelino Gildo Alberto among the most media-visible executives in the country.

In 2022, while still Chairman of EDM, he ranked first in terms of media coverage. In 2023, he secured the second spot, confirming his prominent status among Mozambique’s top executives.
