Mozambique and Malawi strengthen energy cooperation with the signing of strategic agreements

In a strategic move to consolidate energy integration in southern Africa, Mozambique and Malawi signed two important agreements on Wednesday, August 14, that strengthen cooperation between the countries in the energy sector. The agreements include a specific pact on oil and related products, as well as a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on expanding collaboration in the energy area. These understandings are key milestones in the advancement of the Mozambique-Malawi Regional Interconnection Project (MOMA), which aims to transform the energy infrastructure and electricity trade in the region.

The memorandum of understanding signed solidifies the Intergovernmental Agreement signed in 2013 between Mozambique and Malawi, whose main objective is the construction of a power transmission line. This line is designed to supply the growing demand for electricity in Malawi, while at the same time promoting new business opportunities in the southern African energy market. With this, both countries seek to foster greater integration and guarantee regional energy security.

During the signing ceremony, the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, highlighted the significant progress in the MOMA project, which has already reached 72% completion. “We are committed to completing this project, which will not only meet the energy demands of our neighbors, but will also strengthen our position as an energy hub in the region,” said Nyusi in an interview with Diário Notícias.

The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, expressed great enthusiasm for the agreements, stressing that improved access to energy will be vital for his country’s economic development. “These agreements will allow us to substantially improve Malawi’s energy infrastructure, which is crucial for sustainable growth and improving the quality of life of our population,” Chakwera said. He also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Mozambique to other areas, such as air transportation, with a view to facilitating mobility and strengthening ties between the two nations.

These agreements represent an important step towards a more integrated and resilient energy future for southern Africa, reflecting Mozambique and Malawi’s commitment to working together to achieve common goals of development and sustainable progress.
