Mozambique and Tanzania, endowed with abundant natural resources, particularly their significant gas reserves, are actively exploring the possibility of establishing a crucial electrical connection. This collaborative effort materialized during the visit of Samia Suluhu Hassan, underlining the mutual benefits of this endeavor.
Marcelino Gildo Alberto, the esteemed Chairman of Mozambique’s Electricity Company (EDM), expounded on the ambitious project. The plan entails the creation of a robust transmission line, stretching from Toa Re in Tanzania to Palma, Mozambique—a testament to the strategic vision driving this initiative.
The overarching goal is the establishment of a formidable 400-megawatt (MW) line, a feat made possible through a memorandum of understanding already solidified at the governmental level. Further, discussions are in progress to finalize a similar agreement between EDM and Tanzania’s TANESCO, cementing the foundation for seamless cross-border cooperation.
This forward-looking venture has garnered substantial financial support, with two million dollars earmarked for its successful execution. The dividends of this endeavor are poised to be widespread, benefiting both nations. Tanzania stands to export surplus energy to Mozambique, reciprocated by a reciprocal flow in the opposite direction.
This landmark initiative also paves the way for broader regional connectivity. Tanzania’s existing links with neighboring countries like Uganda and Kenya open doors to an extended energy supply corridor, amplifying the potential for shared prosperity in the region. This visionary development was underscored by Chairman Alberto during the visit of the Tanzanian President to the Maputo Thermal Power Plant, marking a significant milestone in the realization of this transformative project.
