Nyusi reaffirms support for Beijing and considers the reintegration of Macau and Hong Kong a success

The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, said that the reintegration of Macau and Hong Kong into China should be considered an example of “success” within the principle of “One country, two systems”. Nyusi reiterated that Mozambique is prepared to support Beijing in its demand for the reunification of Taiwan.

“Mozambique reaffirms its firm and consistent support for the ‘One China’ principle in the Taiwan Strait and the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ model, which has been applied very successfully in Hong Kong and Macau,” Nyusi said.

During a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as part of his working visit to China, Nyusi expressed solidarity with China against accusations of human rights violations and attempts at economic isolation. He also praised China’s cooperation policies with the African continent.

The Mozambican president congratulated Xi Jinping on his efforts to create a fairer and more balanced international system, through initiatives such as global development, global security, global civilization, the new Silk Road, and Artificial Intelligence.

Nyusi also encouraged constructive dialogue between China and its neighboring countries regarding the South China Sea, and highlighted China’s leadership in eradicating poverty in the country.

“We reiterate Mozambique’s commitment to maintaining good relations with the People’s Republic of China, both multilaterally and in matters of common interest. We are grateful for the solidarity we have received, which is aimed at qualitative development for the modernization and rejuvenation of the economy,” he concluded.

Filipe Nyusi is in China at the invitation of Xi Jinping to take part in the 9th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the China-Mozambique Business Forum. FOCAC is taking place in Beijing from 4 to 6 September, with the theme “Joining hands to promote modernization and build a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future”.
