Port of Maputo plans to extend concession contract for another 25 years

Port of Maputo plans to extend concession contract for another 25 years

The government is currently in the process of negotiating with Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo (MPDC), the infrastructure concessionaire, with a view to extending the concession contract for a further 25 years.

This initiative is part of a plan that requires investments estimated at two billion dollars to increase the port’s cargo handling capacity.

In the coming months, MPDC is set to make significant investments. The Executive has granted the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, the authority to negotiate the terms and conditions of the addendum to the concession contract.

The news was announced by the spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, Filimão Suaze, on November 14, after the 39th ordinary session, which reviewed proposals related to government activities.

With 1058 meters of berthing area, covering berths 6, 7, 8 and 9, the MPDC has focused on investing in modern equipment and expanding the port precinct.

Following the rehabilitation, expansion and dredging of the quays to a depth of up to 16 meters, the port is fully operational.

This development will allow the port to receive and load larger ships, thus expanding its cargo handling capacity.

Recently, the Port of Maputo achieved a record by handling more than 27 million tons in 2022, representing a significant increase of 22.7% over the previous year, which registered 22 million tons.
