The Prime Minister of the Republic of Mozambique, Maria Benvinda Delfina Levi, presided today, in the Maputo Province, over the inauguration ceremony of the Vodacom Business Data Center, the largest data storage infrastructure in the country. This facility is designed to meet the requirements of the new legislation on cybersecurity, cybercrime, data protection, and the development, contracting, and operation of cloud computing services. It aligns with the Government’s vision of promoting a secure, regulated digital environment that complies with international best practices.
The ceremony was attended by the Governor of Maputo Province, Mr. Manuel Simão Tule; the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM), Dr. Helena Fernandes; the Vodacom Mozambique Group’s leadership, represented by the Chairman of the Board (PCA), Dr. Lucas Chachine; the Data Center Director, Mr. José Mendes; as well as businesspeople and other distinguished guests.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology across a 2,600 square metre area, the Data Center currently houses 128 racks in its initial phase, with potential to expand to over 500. Its Carrier-Neutral architecture allows any telecommunications operator to access secure storage solutions, positioning Mozambique at the forefront of regional digital infrastructure.
During her address, Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Delfina Levi emphasised that the Vodacom Data Center represents a significant milestone in Mozambique’s digital transformation journey. This infrastructure complements the ongoing efforts by the Government and the private sector to create conditions for increasing and diversifying the country’s capacity to store content and data nationally.
“We expect this Data Center to contribute to strengthening both the quantity and quality of technological infrastructure available in our country, thereby encouraging more national institutions to host their systems and data within national territory,” said Maria Benvinda Delfina Levi.
The Prime Minister further noted that the Government of Mozambique is actively enhancing the regulatory framework governing the country’s digital transformation, aiming to establish a legal regime capable of addressing the new challenges arising from the rapid development of information and communication technologies.
Simon Kari Kari, CEO of Vodacom Mozambique, highlighted the strategic relevance of this investment:
“This Data Center represents a decisive step in Mozambique’s digital transformation. With this infrastructure, we provide companies, institutions, and citizens with a secure, reliable technological environment prepared to meet future challenges. “Digitalisation is no longer a trend – it is a necessity of our times. This center addresses the growing needs of the market and aligns with the Government’s vision for a modern, competitive, and digitally integrated Mozambique. It strengthens the country’s digital sovereignty, ensuring that critical data is managed locally under high security standards.”
Designed to deliver maximum security, high connectivity, and world-class energy efficiency, the Data Center was hailed by José Correia Mendes, Director of Vodacom Business, for its impact on the business sector:
“Mozambican companies now have access to an advanced technological environment that will allow them to scale operations, reduce costs, and operate with greater safety and efficiency. Business success increasingly depends on smart data management, cloud computing, and reliable connectivity – all of which this infrastructure provides.”
Marco Marques, EHOD of Vodacom Carrier Services, detailed the technical aspects:
“This is a Tier III infrastructure with 99.982% uptime, ensuring continuous operation and high resilience. It features full redundancy across all critical systems, multiple high-speed fibre optic connections, and a sophisticated multi-layered security system. Energy efficiency was a core pillar of the project, with intelligent cooling and consumption management systems ensuring a highly efficient PUE.”
This new Data Center is more than a storage and processing facility – it is a catalyst for innovation and growth. It will attract foreign investment, strengthen the national tech sector, and modernise public services.
With this investment, Vodacom Mozambique reaffirms its commitment to leading the country’s digital transformation, delivering advanced connectivity solutions, promoting cybersecurity, and preparing businesses, institutions, and citizens for a more dynamic and interconnected digital future.
Certified by the Uptime Institute as a Tier III facility, the Vodacom Business Data Center guarantees high availability, data security, and energy efficiency – boosting the competitiveness and digitalisation of Mozambican companies.
