Ranking of the most popular Mozambican CEOs in 2023

CARMA recently released a study on the most popular Mozambican CEOs in 2023. This analysis is based on the results collected between January 1 and September 30, 2023. A total of 13,581 news items published in the press and online were counted.

The aim of this analysis is to briefly understand which reputational vectors are most pronounced in the communication relating to each of the CEOs and consequently associated with the company they represent.

For the purposes of qualitative analysis, only articles published in the written press were considered. The list of CEOs to be analyzed was drawn up on the basis of the Study of the 100 Largest Companies in Mozambique in 2022, prepared by KPMG. From this list of 100 companies, the 10 CEOs/PCAs/PCEs/Executive Directors with the highest volume of articles published in the press and online were considered.

The names that make up the top 10 and were analyzed are: João Martins, Marcelino Gildo Alberto, Manuel Soares, Bernardo Aparício, Tomás Matola, Pedro Carvalho, Francisco Costa, Boavida Muhambe, Osório Lucas, Salimo Abdula.

João Martins CEO of Millennium Bim is a newcomer to the ranking and tops the table in terms of volume of articles. However, he ranks seventh in favorability (65.1). He took office as CEO in April 2023, replacing José Reino da Costa.

Marcelino Gildo Alberto, EDM’s CEO, moves from the top of the table in 2022 in terms of volume of articles to second place in 2023. He occupies sixth position in the favorability ranking (65.89), maintaining the same favorability index as in 2022.

Manuel Soares CEO of Moza Banco is the third most visible CEO, and eighth in the favorability index (63.8), entering a very positive record.

Bernardo Aparício CEO of Standard Bank is the fourth CEO in terms of news volume. In the favorability index, he is second to last in the ranking (62.4). The volume of articles about this CEO has risen and the favorability index has fallen compared to 2022.

Tomás Matola, CEO of BNI, took over the leadership of HCB at the beginning of May. He ranks fifth in volume of articles and third in the highly positive favorability index (68.8).

It should be noted that, for qualitative analysis, all the news articles with direct reference to the CEOs/PCAs/PCEs/Executive Directors listed and published in the print media were considered. All the articles were analyzed from the perspective of the CEO and all the content referring to him.
