Zambezia province reached the mark of 10,000 tons of cashew nuts sold by December, as reported by Rádio Moçambique on Tuesday, January 10. Despite this achievement, the figure represents a drop in relation to the target of 17,000 tons for the same period.
According to Rádio Moçambique, the amount marketed generated more than 330 million meticais for producers. The marketing campaign, which began in November last year, is scheduled to end in February. Until then, there are still 7,000 tons to be marketed in order to reach the target.
Sifa António, delegate of the National Almond Institute in Zambézia, expressed confidence in the possibility of reaching the target, highlighting the increase in purchase prices and the availability of the product as favorable factors.
The price of cashew nuts in the region is currently above 35 meticais per kilo, compared to less than 30 meticais in 2023, demonstrating a significant increase. The marketing of cashew nuts in Zambézia covers 12 districts, with Mocuba, Pebane, Gilé and Mulevala standing out as the main producers.
The sale of cashew nuts is an essential economic activity for the region, and the performance of the marketing year is an important reflection of the local economy. The increase in prices and the expectation of reaching the planned target indicate an optimistic scenario for cashew nut producers in Zambézia.
