Sofala: Climate change reduces fish processing by 14

The director of the port, António Remédio, pointed to the effects of climate change and the late start of fishing activity by some industrial operators as the main causes of the drop.

The infrastructure processed, in the first six months of this year, about six thousand tons of various fish, a volume that represents more than half of the annual plan, which points to about nine thousand and five hundred tons.

The Beira Fishing Port not only receives and processes fish caught in national waters, but also from some neighboring countries.

The Beira fishing port was built in the colonial era and degraded over time until it fell into disuse about 20 years ago. It was completely destroyed after the passage of cyclone “Eline” through the central region of the country in 2000.

Aware of the importance of the infrastructure, the Executive carried out reconstruction, expansion, and modernization works. Currently, the pier was extended 188 to 377 meters, allowing the berthing of 16 industrial fishing vessels simultaneously, against the previous eight, as well as the handling of fresh domestic and foreign cargo.
