China forgives debts of 17 African countries

Although the 17 countries have not been named, checks carried out by Business Insider Africa show that Mozambique, Djibouti, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda and South Africa are among the African countries with high exposure to China’s debt.

In statements quoted by Bloomberg, the Chinese foreign minister gave this assurance during the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, although he did not give details about which nations will see interest forgiven or the maturity of the loans included in this debt relief.

Since 2000, Beijing has announced multiple rounds of debt forgiveness, having canceled at least $3.4 billion (€34.2 billion) in debt through 2019, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University of International Studies.
