SEFA and AfDB inject USD 2.5 million to boost renewable energy production

Resources from the Bank-administered Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) will be used to implement Mozambique’s Renewable Energy Integration Program (MREP).

“With the support of the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa, Mozambique’s capacity to integrate larger shares of wadeable renewables will increase, strengthening Mozambique’s efforts to become a major regional electricity supplier,” said Daniel Schroth, Director of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the African Development Bank.

“Taking into consideration that Mozambique is a country very vulnerable to climate change, the project will help build a more sustainable and resilient power generation infrastructure,” he added.

This funding is primarily intended to assist Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) in four main components: financial support for technical, economic, environmental and social feasibility studies for the development of a floating solar power plant in the Chicamba reservoir; financial support for a feasibility study for Battery Power Storage Systems at up to 10 sites in Mozambique; qualification of EDM staff; and support for proposal preparation.

“We are very excited about the launch of activities under the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa in Mozambique, together with strategic and innovative projects, and that will contribute to the diversification of the energy matrix, as well as the development of a study on storage needs, which will enable the development of more renewable energy projects,” said Marcelino Gildo Alberto, President of EDM, the beneficiary.

“The SEFA support also includes a training program, which will enable our staff to develop strategic skills related to the development and management of renewable energy projects,” he added.

The funding will also be used for the preparation of studies aimed at increasing the share of variable renewable energy production in Mozambique’s energy mix and feasibility studies for the development of floating solar photovoltaic energy, as well as financial audits on the technical assistance provided.
