Dispute between ETG and Royal Group threatens Mozambique’s food exports

Mozambique is at the center of a dispute between ETG, an African raw materials company, and Royal Group, a Mozambican food trading company. ETG is trying to prevent the export of some 60 million dollars worth of food seized by Royal Group, accusing the authorities of illegally assisting in the seizure. The dispute, which began in 2022, is intensifying, leading ETG to seek presidential intervention.

Mahesh Patel, chairman of ETG, has written a letter to President Filipe Nyusi, asking for presidential intervention. The importance of Mozambique’s pigeonpea to India and the challenges faced due to low rainfall in India’s growing regions are highlighted.

The text also mentions allegations of political interference in Mozambique’s agricultural exports and the impact of the dispute on pigeonpea prices. With current prices and the possible suspension of imports by India at stake, the resolution of this dispute is crucial for Mozambique’s economic stability.
