Mozambique’s pigeonpea exports exceed expectations, despite trade disputes

Despite the tense climate among exporters, Mozambique exceeded its targets for exporting bóer beans, especially to the Indian market, last year.

The Minister of Industry and Trade, Silvino Moreno, revealed that more than 245,000 tons were shipped to India, exceeding the annual target of just over 200,000 tons, during the launch of the 19th Annual Private Sector Conference in Maputo, an event organized by the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) in conjunction with the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

“The process of exporting agricultural products went normally. There are challenges from the point of view of quality and the documentation process we carry out, but we are improving,” explained Moreno.

In addition to the Indian market, which is one of the main destinations for pulses, Mozambique has also exported to the United Arab Emirates and England.

With regard to the dispute involving two companies that export pigeon peas, the minister recommended that they engage in dialogue, stressing that this is the most favorable way to resolve the impasse without interfering in the normal course of the country’s commercial activity.

“The government has always played its part. Not only does it call the parties together, it also reminds them of the rules of international trade. There are things that a trade actor cannot do,” he emphasized, adding that the Executive’s role in the dispute is to ensure that companies and public institutions are not affected.
