The president of the World Bank (WB), Ajay Banga, praised Mozambique’s role as a benchmark in the southern African electricity market. During a meeting in Washington, United States, with the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, Banga promised new partnerships to boost the country’s energy sector.
In his statements to the press, Banga highlighted Mozambique’s advances in access to electricity, as well as its growing importance as a base for the regional energy market, considering this a significant step for the country’s development.
The WB president stressed that both the government and the private sector have many opportunities for collaboration to maximize the benefits for all.
“We had a productive discussion about the economic progress Mozambique seeks to achieve, including improvements in economic growth and inflation control. But more importantly, we discussed the opportunities for young people and their future,” Banga pointed out.
He pointed out that the tourism and infrastructure sectors have the potential to generate more jobs for young people, provided there is alignment and cooperation.
In 2023, the WB approved a credit of 300 million dollars for the “Mais Oportunidades” project, which aims to improve access to finance and economic opportunities in Mozambique, financed by the WB’s International Development Association. The project aims to create more than 26,000 new jobs by 2029.
Filipe Nyusi is in Washington to take part in an international conference on the Miombo forest, organized by the International Conservation Caucus Foundation (ICCF) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), in partnership with the Mozambican government.
