Coral Sul made 63 gas exports in the first half of 2024

The Coral Sul project, located in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, continues to consolidate its presence in the international liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. From the start of exports in November 2022 until June 2024, 63 shipments of LNG were made, totaling 4.48 million tons exported, as reported by the newspaper Notícias.

According to statistics recently released by the government, more than 20 of these shipments took place in 2024. The Bank of Mozambique pointed out that in the first half of this year, natural gas export revenues increased by 6.4 billion meticais (approximately 102.1 million dollars) compared to the same period last year.

In 2023, gas exports generated revenue of 1.6 million meticais, with a monthly average of four to five vessels departing from Cabo Delgado. This growth reflects both export policies and the growing international demand for natural gas.

However, despite the positive results, Rudêncio Morais, executive director for research and production at the National Hydrocarbons Company (ENH), pointed out that Mozambique still faces challenges in increasing its production capacity. He noted that although the Coral Sul project is on the rise, it has not yet reached its full potential.

In the same vein, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in his latest State of the Nation report, stressed that the project’s peak production will be reached in the coming years, during which time Coral Sul’s contribution to the national economy will be even more significant. Nyusi said that the liquefaction of natural gas in Cabo Delgado is the realization of a decades-long dream, positioning Mozambique as a relevant player in the global energy market.

In 2024, the main destinations for Mozambican natural gas were India, South Africa, South Korea, Singapore and China. The Coral Sul platform, located about 30 kilometers from the Palma district, is operated by the Italian company Eni on behalf of the Area 4 partners, which include Mozambique Rovuma Venture, Galp, Kogas and ENH. The facility has an annual production capacity of 3.3 million tons.
