Honeywell implements advanced solutions in Mozambique’s energy sector

Honeywell is playing a key role in advancing Mozambique’s energy sector by implementing cutting-edge technologies in the natural gas purification process. This development is taking place as part of the Rovuma LNG project, located on the Afungi peninsula, in the municipality of Palma, in the province of Cabo Delgado. The Rovuma LNG project, led by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), which is a partnership between ExxonMobil, Eni S.p.A. and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), aims to respond to the growing global demand for natural gas and, at the same time, promote access to energy in the region.

Honeywell’s contribution to the project is significant, with the implementation of Honeywell UOP’s advanced solutions in the natural gas pre-treatment process prior to its liquefaction. Among the most outstanding technologies is the SeparSIV™ system, which removes heavy hydrocarbons through thermal absorption, and the MolSIV™ unit, responsible for removing water, carbon dioxide, mercury and other contaminants from natural gas. These systems do not use solvents, which guarantees greater efficiency and less pressure loss during the process. As a result, purified natural gas meets the strict standards required by the industry, guaranteeing its quality and efficiency.

Rajesh Gattupalli, president of Honeywell UOP, stressed the importance of the technologies provided by the company, which are essential to ensuring that natural gas is aligned with the highest industry standards. “Our technology is essential to guaranteeing the quality of natural gas, bringing it into line with the highest industry standards. This not only optimizes production efficiency, but also reinforces the sector’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions,” said Gattupalli.

For his part, Arne Gibbs, General Manager of ExxonMobil Mozambique, highlighted the importance of this collaboration. “The integration of Honeywell’s proven technologies into our project demonstrates our commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. Together we are paving the way for a cleaner energy future in Mozambique,” said Gibbs.

The Rovuma LNG project, which aims to produce around 18 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year, will have 12 modular liquefaction units, each with a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year (Mtpa). To feed these units, two parallel pre-treatment systems of 9 Mtpa each will be installed, ensuring the optimization of the gas purification process prior to liquefaction.

This investment not only strengthens Mozambique’s position in the global energy market, but also boosts local economic growth and contributes to sustainable development. The Rovuma LNG project reflects the enormous potential of technological solutions to meet global energy challenges, providing the people of Mozambique and the world with access to a cleaner and more affordable source of energy.

The partnership with Honeywell is therefore an important step towards consolidating Mozambique as a strategic player in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market, while at the same time opening doors to a more sustainable and efficient energy future.
