Coral Sul, announced the start of first gas extraction at its Coral Sul FLNG plant. With the introduction of gas at the plant, the consortium will now be in a position to achieve its first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipment in the second half of 2022.

The South Coral Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) project located offshore Mozambique in the southern part of Area-4 of the Rovuma Basin is the first FLNG project in Africa. This project will put Mozambique on the map of LNG producing countries.

Natural gas is a fossil fuel composed of simple hydrocarbons, primarily methane, although it contains small amounts of other gases-ethane, propane, butane, and pentane.

The extracted gas is then cooled to a liquid (liquefied) state, to a temperature of -260°F (-161.5°C), so that it can be transported or stored. The volume of natural gas in its liquid state is about 600 times smaller than its volume in its gaseous state.

The Coral-South FLNG project was implemented within an integrated energy optimization approach, through a systematic analysis of improvements to ensure energy efficiency.

This process includes among others, zero gas flaring during the normal course of operations, the use of aeroderivative, thermally efficient gas turbines for the refrigeration and generation compressors, the use of Dry Low NOx technology to reduce Nitrogen Oxide emissions, and waste heat recovery systems during the process.

Coral South FLNG, has a liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tons per year (MTPA) and will put into production 450 billion cubic meters of gas from the vast Coral reservoir, located offshore in the Rovuma Basin.
