Get to know the reasons that hinder the insertion of young people in the employment market

Young people are the ones who suffer most from the lack of jobs in the province of Tete, central Mozambique. According to DW, they point to corruption, nepotism and the requirement for years of experience as strong barriers to entering the labor market.

Silvio Campanje, who graduated in mining four years ago, never had a secure job. “Nowadays, to get a good job, you have to have an influence. Without that, opportunities are scarce,” he laments.

Another young man, Faduco Semente, has a similar experience. Graduated in mechanical metalworking and environmental management a decade ago, he was only able to work for two years.

According to data from the National Employment Institute (INEP) in Tete, the province plans to create about 89,000 jobs by the end of 2025, with 43,000 offers submitted so far.

This plan, however, cannot keep up with the growing number of young people trained and of educational establishments, which have increased in various areas of study, with emphasis on technical-vocational training.

In September, in the first job fair in Tete, where 30 public and private institutions were present, only 80 job vacancies were displayed for the more than 1,000 young people who were looking for an opportunity in the labor market, leaving few alternatives for hundreds of qualified people.

Young Carlota Sopia is still in training, but already fears the problems of the job market. “They want people with professional experience and we, without professional experience, end up losing out,” she comments.

According to social activist Júlio Calengo, it is necessary to train young people so that they know how to transform their scientific knowledge into successful businesses.

“My brothers need to be trained. All of this necessarily involves training in business and management, and training in the identification of problems and opportunities,” he suggests.
