Government highlights commitment to sustainable development in Mozambique’s energy sector

António Osvaldo Saíde, Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, reiterated the Mozambican government’s commitment to economic and social development through access to electricity. During his participation in the Mozambique-EU Investment Forum, Saíde highlighted the ongoing efforts to provide universal access to energy and attract investment in the renewable energy sector.

The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of legislation, mentioning the approval of the concession extension until 2058 and Law No. 12 of 2022, which defines the general organization of the electricity sector and the legal regime for related activities. He stressed the openness to private investment, highlighting the need for partnerships to boost the sector.

Saíde shared significant advances, such as the notable increase in the availability of electricity and the growing contribution of renewable energies. In another focus, he mentioned specific projects, such as the inauguration of the Tetereane Power Plant, the first clean renewable energy infrastructure that includes a 6 MegaWatt Hour (MWh) battery energy storage system, highlighting the crucial role of renewable energies in balancing the energy matrix.

Located in the district of Cuamba, in Niassa province, the solar power plant will guarantee the stability and quality of the electricity supply to that province and the northern region of the country.

The Deputy Minister also addressed initiatives to promote energy efficiency, including regulations for off-grid generation and the energy efficiency strategy. He stressed the importance of considering the country’s energy resource potential in the transition to modern energy systems.

Saíde closed his statements by stressing the need for a secure and efficient energy transition, with a view to improving quality of life and attracting productive investment. He also highlighted Mozambique’s commitment to a transition based on clean energy, universal access to modern energy and the adoption of green technologies for transportation.

The Vice-Minister’s message reflects the Mozambican government’s commitment to boosting the energy sector as an integral part of the country’s sustainable development.
