Historic partnership: Yango and ATAXCIMA join forces to revolutionize the cab industry in Mozambique

The Maputo City Taxi Drivers Association (ATAXCIMA) and Yango, an international technology company and one of Africa’s leading app-based urban mobility services, which connects transport service providers with passengers, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the Mozambican capital on March 12 with a view to developing the sector. Technology, training and safety education are the main axes of the cooperation established between ATAXCIMA and Yango.

The creation of synergies between ATAXCIMA and Yango, formalized in the Memorandum of Understanding, is an important step for the development of mobility in the city of Maputo. The document, signed today, includes a series of commitments from both parties with a view to strengthening digital services in the sector, including driver training and safety education for passengers and drivers.

Along these lines, Yango, which has experience in the mobility sector in more than 20 countries, will support ATAXCIMA in creating a code of conduct for the cab industry, an instrument that the multinational in Mozambique will include in the training of its partners. The collaboration with the association also covers the design of important projects to improve the cab sector.

Yango has also agreed to encourage its partner transport companies to join ATAXCIMA and to develop awareness campaigns related to traffic and transport safety.

The Memorandum of Understanding suggests that ATAXCIMA collaborate with Yango on awareness campaigns about digital private transport services, focusing on their benefits and added value.

As part of its mission, ATAXCIMA will continue to work to guarantee road transport conditions to and from Maputo city for its members and partners, whom it represents before government bodies, and to improve passenger transport conditions. It will also support drivers interested in entering the cab business to obtain the necessary licenses and driving permits for public services.

At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, the president of ATAXCIMA, Bernardo Venâncio Machangane said that, “for the association, it is important to establish alliances with all the players in the mobility sector in our capital, so that we can face the challenges of this vital sector together, for the social and economic growth of the city and the country”. For Machangane, “Yango’s international experience, as a digital services company, can contribute to the accelerated development of our associates and partners, with a view to the much-needed modernization of services”.

In the same vein, Zameer Adam, Yango’s Director in Mozambique, welcomed ATAXCIMA’s dynamism in developing not only the mobility sector, but also the working conditions and safety of drivers and passengers.

“Since we started our activities in Mozambique in November 2022, we have aligned ourselves with these same objectives, which we consider to be priorities and which are fundamental for the mobility sector to grow correctly, without deviations, and with solidity”, said Zameer.

“By formalizing this memorandum with ATAXCIMA,” continued Adam, “Yango is once again demonstrating its commitment to the city of Maputo, to Mozambicans and to all those who, every day, with effort and dedication, move our capital city behind the wheel. Many of the initiatives in which we will be taking part, such as support for driver training and the creation of a code of conduct, as well as safety awareness campaigns, unite us all as a sector, for a common good that will benefit cab companies, drivers, passengers and, of course, the country.”

In another development, Zameer Adam assured that situations such as those reported in recent days, about it being unsafe to travel by taxi using the Yango App, are no longer a problem, one of the reasons touched on in the recent memorandum signed.
