More than half a million families had access to energy in 2024

The Ministry of Finance announced that more than 560,000 new household electricity connections were made in 2024, bringing national energy coverage to 60% of the population, up from 53.4% in 2023.

“During the energy expansion process, 563,800 new household connections were established, of which 395,600 through the national electricity grid and 170,100 through renewable sources,” details the budget execution report.

During the same period, the first 40 kilometers of the 400 kilovolt (kV) high-voltage transmission line were built, which will connect the country from north to south, with sections between Temane, Maputo, Chimuara and Alto Molócue.

The new connections are part of the government’s “Energy for All” program, implemented by Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and the Energy Fund (FUNAE). The initiative, set out in the National Electrification Strategy (ENE) approved in 2018, aims to provide energy to the entire population by 2030.

In addition to the expansion of the electricity grid, the National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that electricity production has grown by 5.3% in the last five years, from 18,700 Gigawatt hours (GWh) in 2019 to 19,700 GWh in 2023. Renewable energy generation has been a determining factor in this growth, with hydroelectric plants accounting for 82.7% of the electricity produced in 2023.
