Mozambique begins limestone survey in Gaza with a view to potential exploitation

The Mozambican government has announced the start of evaluation activities for the possible exploitation of limestone in several districts of Gaza province, located in the southern part of the country. Limestone, a sedimentary rock rich in calcium carbonate, is widely used in various industries, such as chemicals, iron and steel, paper, paints, food, plastics, agriculture and construction, and is one of the most important industrial mineral rocks due to its versatility, wide availability and low cost.

Jerónimo Mutisse, head of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, said that limestone samples had already been collected in the districts of Massingir, Mabalane, Mapai, Chicuálacuala, Massangena and Chigubo. These samples will be subjected to tests to determine both the quantity and quality of the ore present in the region.

“If the results of the samples are positive, we will mobilize investors to exploit the limestone, turning Gaza into a reference point for this resource,” said Mutisse, in an interview with Rádio Moçambique. He pointed out that, with favorable data, the province could also receive cement factories, which would boost the development of local communities and create new job opportunities for young people in the region.

Furthermore, in June of this year, the Jiangxi Bureau of Geology, a Chinese institution, announced that it is preparing to begin mineral research activities in Gaza. The initial focus will be on evaluating zircon, uranium and gold. The results of this research will determine whether the exploration and export of these natural resources will be viable and commercially profitable.
