Mozambique is making great strides towards its goal of providing electricity for the entire nation. With 67% of the electrification target already achieved, the country is on track to reach 100% energy access by 2030. This achievement was highlighted by the National Energy Director of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, Marcelina Mataveia, during the recent Mozambique Energy and Mining Conference and Exhibition in Maputo.
Between 2018 and 2023, the electricity access rate stood at 54%, with a notable increase in the use of energy sources outside the national grid. Marcelina Mataveia stressed that the government is focused on policies that encourage investment in other energy sources, especially renewable ones, highlighting the importance of capitalizing on these alternatives in the face of the global scenario of transition to cleaner sources.
Before the “Energy for All” project, the government made an average of 150,000 new connections a year, a figure that doubled to 300,000 after the project was implemented. This resulted in an access rate of 54.7%, with 7.1% of connections being off-grid, demonstrating a significant growth in the contribution of renewable energies.
n addition, the approval of legislative reforms, such as the regulation on Access to Energy in Off-Grid Zones, is promoting the development of electricity infrastructure and favoring investment in the sector. Arcádia Nhatumbo, from the Electrification Division of the Mozambique Energy Fund, highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in lighting administrative posts and revealed that a mechanism is being drawn up to increase private sector participation in this process.
With these advances and ongoing efforts, Mozambique is paving the way for a brighter and more accessible future for all its citizens. The expansion of electrification not only improves people’s quality of life, but also boosts the country’s economic and social development.
