Mozambique’s energy strategy highlighted at Italy-Africa summit

Mozambique’s participation in the Italy-Africa Summit, held recently in Rome, was marked by the sharing of the National Energy Transition Strategy, as highlighted by President Filipe Nyusi. The strategy, presented during the event at the request of the organizers, emphasizes the role of natural gas as a transitional energy source in line with global efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

During the summit, President Nyusi also met with various personalities, including Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In his interactions, Nyusi recognized the importance of investments by Italian companies in Mozambique, highlighting the contribution of the multinational Eni in the extraction of natural gas in the Rovuma region of Cabo Delgado.

In addition, Nyusi emphasized the importance of humanitarian support and building resilience in communities, highlighting his audience with Ambassador Cindy McCain, executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP).

Discussions during the summit covered topics such as infrastructure financing, energy and investment, with an emphasis on Africa’s position as an active partner in development, contributing its resources and seeking partnerships to boost economic growth and job creation.

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, announced a significant investment of at least 5.5 billion euros in Africa, as part of the “Mattei Plan“, which aims to create opportunities on the continent and deal with the challenges of migratory flows in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mozambique’s participation in this summit highlights the country’s commitment to the energy transition and sustainable development, reinforcing its position as a strategic partner in promoting international cooperation and advancing the global clean energy agenda.
