Port of Maputo records 31.2 million tons of cargo in 2023

The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) announced its annual results on Tuesday, January 16, highlighting significant growth in various metrics and thus consolidating its position as one of the region’s main economic drivers.

According to the entity, a total of 31.2 million tons of cargo were handled in 2023, of which 25 million were various ores, namely chromium, ferrochrome, magnetite, coal, phosphate ore, vanadium, titanium, copper and vermiculite.

“The handling of this cargo reflects the diversification strategy that the port of Maputo has been pursuing in recent years. One point to note is the more balanced distribution of the volumes transported. While 61% was handled by road, 39% was by rail,” said MPDC’s executive director, Osório Lucas.

According to him, the sustainable growth of the transport corridor continues to be a concern for MPDC, stressing that although there has been an increase in rail traffic, demand for the port has grown exponentially, underlining that the company he runs is already looking for a better balance between rail and road cargo.

Osório Lucas also explained that the substantial increase in cargo volume has had a direct impact on the amount of fixed and variable fees paid to the Mozambican government, revealing that in 2023 his institution contributed more than 41 million dollars (excluding taxes and dividends to shareholders).

The results achieved by MPDC in 2023 demonstrate its commitment to growth and development, positioning the Port of Maputo as a vital element in the Mozambican economy.
