Demand for electricity is expected to continue to grow at an annual rate of 7-8%, as the country strives to achieve the ambitious goal of providing universal access to electricity by 2030.
In order to achieve this goal, while limiting its environmental impact, the European Union, as part of its PROMOVE Energy strategy, is supporting the Government of Mozambique with the PROLER program (Promotion of Renewable Energy Auctions). This program aims to increase energy production from renewable energy sources.
PROLER represents a new paradigm that promotes transparent and competitive auctions with the aim of offering the lowest possible tariffs to end consumers.
In another approach, PROLER also has the ambition to support the creation of attractive conditions for the private sector to accelerate and expand its investment in renewable energy projects in Mozambique.
In terms of impacts, the first result of the Dondo Solar Power Plant pilot project proves that the proposed scheme is attractive enough to leverage private investment.
It is also expected that this program will contribute to reducing greenhouse gases. The construction of the first three photovoltaic plants is expected to reduce emissions by 25,000 tons of CO2/year and provide energy for the rural consumption of 240,000 households.
These findings were made today by the PROLER representative, who was speaking on the sidelines of the 3rd Business Conference on Renewable Energies in Mozambique.
The conference is organized by the Lusophone Renewable Energy Association (ALER) together with the Mozambican Renewable Energy Association (AMER), with the support of GET.invest Mozambique, funded by the European Union and Germany and part of the European GET.invest programme.
