Sasol, the South African petrochemical company, has significantly increased the amount of taxes it pays to the Mozambican state, according to figures published by the Carta de Moçambique news portal. Between July 2022 and June 2023, the company paid a total of 124.9 million dollars (equivalent to 8 billion meticais), more than double the 67.1 million dollars (4.3 billion meticais) paid in the previous period, between July 2021 and June 2022.
This increase represents a rise of more than 57.7 million dollars (3.6 billion meticais), or 46.25%, in the taxes paid by Sasol due to natural gas exploration in Temane (Inhassoro) and Pande (Govuro), in Inhambane province.
The main highlights of the taxes paid by Sasol during this period include Corporate Income Tax (IRPC), which totaled 95.8 million dollars, compared to the 48.4 million dollars paid between 2021 and 2022. In 2022, Sasol Petroleum Temane (SPT) was recognized by the Tax Authority (AT) as the third largest IRPC taxpayer.
Another highlight is the Oil Production Tax paid in kind, through the gas delivered to ENH-Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, which increased from 6.8 million dollars in 2022 to 12.7 million dollars in 2023.
It is important to note that the 2.75% that is transferred annually to the communities of Pande and Temane is deducted from the revenue from the Petroleum Production Tax paid in cash, and not from all the revenue produced by Sasol, which has a negative influence on the amounts disbursed by the government.
