After 26 years of operations, Trans African Concessions (TRAC) is preparing to close its concession on the Maputo Development Corridor, scheduled to end in February 2028. TRAC’s CEO, Alex Van Niekerk, shared this information during the eighth Maputo Port Conference, highlighting the plans for the return of the N4 road and the improvement projects that could be carried out before the concession ends.
According to Van Niekerk, TRAC plans to make significant improvements to the highway, including doubling the section of road between the Moamba junction and the Ressano Garcia border, as well as expanding capacity along the Matola River section by widening the road. However, due to the proximity of the end of the current contract, these improvements are temporarily suspended.
The CEO emphasized the importance of starting negotiations for the extension or a new tender of the contract, in order to allow investments in improvements to be carried out now, thus guaranteeing the safety and efficiency of the road corridor.
Van Niekerk also highlighted the importance of diversifying modes of transport at the Port of Maputo, pointing out that in 2023, 61% of the cargo volume was transported by road, while 39% was transported by rail. This balanced distribution reflects a significant increase compared to 2022, demonstrating the evolution of transportation in the region.
The end of TRAC’s concession on the Maputo Corridor represents an important transition for the region’s transport infrastructure.
