US plans to invest 21 million dollars in water and sanitation in Mozambique

The United States of America (USA) announced on Tuesday, January 30, that it plans to invest 21 million dollars in the water and sanitation sectors in Mozambique. According to information from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Mozambique is part of the five-year High Priority program under the Global Water Strategy.

“USAID’s investments in Mozambique will provide access to water and sanitation services for at least 325,000 people and 90 schools and hospitals. It is important to note that our programs aim to strengthen Mozambican institutions,” the organization said in a statement.

According to USAID, “the sanitation sector is challenging, as by 2022 only 38% of the population had access to basic sanitation facilities”.

“Over the next five years, USAID will work with the Mozambican Executive to expand access to water and sanitation services and products, as well as strengthening national and local institutional capacity to manage water resources in a resilient and sustainable manner,” it added.

The Agency emphasized that this strategy “marks a new era of collaboration and progress, with support for water, sanitation and hygiene being a critical component of the US Government’s broader assistance in Mozambique.”

“The US provides more than 812 million dollars in annual assistance to improve the quality of health care and education in Mozambique, in addition to promoting economic prosperity and stability,” he concluded.
