Vodacom reaches 86% of the population and maintains market leadership

Vodacom Mozambique recently announced during the Media Briefing, organized by the operator, a series of ambitious goals to promote sustainability and inclusion in its operations. These initiatives cover various areas, from inclusion in the workplace to energy transition and financial inclusion.

Vodacom Mozambique’s ESG indicators

One of the operator’s main goals is to achieve gender parity in the workplace, with 40% of women in leadership positions and 35% of women in the entire workforce by the end of the financial year 2023/24. On the other hand, Vodacom Mozambique intends to increase the hiring of employees with special needs, aiming to reach 1% representation by the same period.

As far as energy efficiency is concerned, the company is focused on reducing its carbon emissions and increasing the use of solar energy in its operations. Currently, 287 antennas are powered by solar panels, helping to avoid around 1.2 million kilograms of carbon emissions in the last year.
In terms of the circular economy, Vodacom Mozambique has set itself the ambitious target of recycling or reusing 100% of the electronic waste resulting from its operations. This target has already been achieved, demonstrating the company’s commitment to reducing waste and protecting the environment.

In terms of financial inclusion, Vodacom is committed to expanding the coverage radius through its M-Pesa service, with the aim of reaching 75% of the adult population by 2025. This service plays a vital role in facilitating financial transactions and access to financial services in remote areas.

Regarding digital inclusion, the operator is committed to connecting 21 million Mozambicans to its network and providing free internet to 500 secondary schools by 2025. This will ensure that more people have access to education and online opportunities across the country.

Connected to innovation and the future of Mozambique

Since its inception, the company has been a pioneer in the telecommunications sector, making a significant contribution to improving the quality of life of Mozambicans and promoting the country’s progress. In recent years the operator has expanded its network to reach more than 12 million Mozambicans, covering around 86% of the country’s population. What began as a voice service has evolved to include a wide range of offers, from data to internet, and even digital services for companies.

The company has not only kept pace with technological changes, but has also led many of them. It was the first to introduce 3G services in 2010, followed by the pioneering launch of 4G services in 2018 and the rollout of 5G in 2023. These milestones reflect Vodacom Mozambique’s commitment to innovation and the continuous improvement of the customer experience.

In addition to its performance in the field of telecommunications, Vodacom Mozambique also stands out for its commitment to sustainability and social inclusion. Strategic partnerships with organizations such as Engie Energy Access demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing cleaner and more accessible energy solutions to communities across the country.

Social Inclusion and Development

Corporate social responsibility is also at the heart of Vodacom Mozambique’s operations. Through initiatives such as the “Faz Crescer” program, the company invests in improving education by providing computer labs in public secondary schools and encouraging the participation of girls in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In addition, Vodacom Mozambique is committed to promoting gender equality and empowering women, through programs such as “Shine” and the “Code Like a Girl” initiative. In addition to playing a vital role in supporting public health, it collaborates with the “Goodbye Malaria” program to reduce the rates of contamination by the disease throughout the country.

As part of its vision for the future, the company is investing in new technologies and infrastructures, such as the construction of a state-of-the-art Data Center, to guarantee the quality and security of its digital services.

It should be noted that Vodacom Mozambique remains committed to connecting people, transforming lives and boosting the country’s economic and social development. With a shared vision of a more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable Mozambique, the company invites everyone to join them on this journey of growth and progress.
