Mozambique’s energy coverage rate reaches 52% in 2023

The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, announced that the energy coverage rate in Mozambique reached 52% this year, up from 48% in 2022 and 42% in 2021. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the electricity grid at the Zinhane administrative post in the Chigubo district of Gaza, southern Mozambique.

Carlos Zacarias said that the new electricity network in Zinhane had an investment of 49 million meticais, earmarked for the construction of 35 kilometers of medium voltage network, four kilometers of low voltage network and the installation of two transformer stations. This infrastructure will not only contribute to improving the living conditions of the local population, but will also boost key sectors such as agriculture, fishing, agro-processing and tourism.

The minister highlighted the importance of the electrification of Zinhane, while pointing out that four administrative posts in Gaza province are still awaiting electrification, out of the 45 that exist. Carlos Zacarias took the opportunity to appeal to the population for support in combating the vandalization and theft of electrical equipment, problems that affect various regions of the country.

According to Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the country has 416 administrative posts, of which 318 are connected to the National Electricity Grid. The increase in the power coverage rate reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to expand access to electricity and boost development in various regions of the country.
